Australia's Censorship Ministers have finally decided to release a discussion paper on the introduction of an R18+ rating for videogames in the country. The paper had previously been sheleved as South Australian Attorney-General and family friendly loving Michael Atkinson had decided against releasing the paper, which needed everyone to mutually agree in order to get the go ahead.
However, at yesterday's Standing Committee of Attorneys-General meeting it appears Mr. Atkinson had a Mr.Burns like change of heart as he decided to allow the public release of the paper after Attorney-General Rob Hulls pushed the issue. The paper will be released to the public, accessible to everyone via the world of the internet by the end of the year. The South Australian Attorney-General has not stated why he did not allow the paper to be released last week or why he has changed his stance this week.
Currently MA15+ is Australia's highest rating for games, anything deemed unacceptable for 15-year-olds is refused classification and banned from being sold or imported into Australia.
